Preparing for The Promise (cont.)

Anger Management
Following this enthusiastic welcome by LINKS members, the girls attend a presentation by Dr. Deborah Prowthro-Stith, a national expert on youth violence and anger management.

Dr. Prowth-Stith“You will never grow out of getting angry,” Dr. Prowthro-Stith tells the group. “It’s what you do with that anger that makes you a strong leader, a healthy adult, or a happy kid.”

Following this presentation, the girls and their moms attend a series of short, informative workshops including: violence in schools, violence in dating, healthy living, and aerobics, to name a few.

Younger kids benefit too.
This and the future planned leadership weekends all compliment other youth programming sponsored by The LINKS that are targeted to younger children.

The chapter has adopted Edison Environmental Science Academy (Kalamazoo Public Schools) and Ann J. Kellogg Elementary (Battle Creek Public Schools). Some of the services at these schools include: providing opportunities to attend cultural events, writing workshops and tutoring to support general academic achievement.

Sweet Honey in the Rock
LINKS programming is funded through proceeds from the chapter’s annual fundraising event, “Just Jazz”.

At this year’s fundraiser, the LINKS will be presenting the internationally renowned A Capella singing group, Sweet Honey in the Rock. This Grammy award-winning ensemble of seven African-American women puts forth a pleasing mix of sounds from multiple musical genres, including: blues, spiritual, traditional gospel hymns, rap, reggae, African chants, hip-hop, ancient lullabies and jazz.

This event is slated for September 29, 2006 at Kalamazoo’s Chenery Auditorium. Be sure to “save the date” and support the Kalamazoo Chapter of The LINKS. This performance is not to be missed!

What is the Kalamazoo Promise?

A group of citizens interested in economic strength and quality of life in the City of Kalamazoo announced in the fall of 2005, a tremendous contribution on behalf of KPS students. All students who graduate from Kalamazoo Public Schools, are residing in the district, and have been students four years or more will be given funding for college tuition and mandatory fees. The amount of available dollars depends on years of residency and the number of grades attended in KPS, up to 100% of tuition and mandatory fees. The funds will be available to use at any public university or community college in the State of Michigan.

“There is no doubt in my mind,” said School Superintendent, Janice Brown, “that this will spur housing sales, attract new business development, and add to an already solid quality of life in Kalamazoo.
