-“Rocky Gap Beach,” Saint Joseph
A beachcomber’s paradise
Tucked into a quiet residential neighborhood just a mile or so from downtown
Saint Joseph is Rocky Gap Beach. The overlook platform situated high
on a bluff provides beautiful views of the Lake Michigan shoreline. But
climbing down the dune to the pristine beach below is where the real
fun begins. Glistening along the surf of this small beach are perfectly
polished bits of beach glass. An artful hand can turn these colorful
bits into jewelry and other crafts. Along with hunting for beach glass,
this secluded and serene respite is a favorite lunchtime spot for nearby
workers. It is also the perfect place to sunbathe with a good book, take
a sunset stroll, or just sit and listen to the waves. Even on a hot summer
weekend, the beach is far from crowded and sunbathers can spread far
enough apart to give each other privacy. Rocky Gap is dog-friendly and
is also designated as a kite-surfing beach. There is ample free parking
and it is easy to find. From M63, go west on Rocky Gap Road as indicated
by the brown highway sign. The parking lot and overlook platform will
be on your right.

-“Tiscornia Park,” Saint Joseph
A sunbather’s beach
Just north of the summer hot spot, Silver Beach, is Tiscornia Park where
you can enjoy all that summer has to offer, but without the crowds. Located
on the quieter side of the channel, this park is a beach-goer’s
paradise. With beautiful white sand beaches and lots of shoreline access
for swimming and splashing, this is the perfect spot to wile away a summer
day. Pack a lunch to enjoy in the picnic area with plenty of tables,
grills, and trashcans as well as a covered pavillion. There is a $3 fee
to park in the lot, which is also the parking lot for the North Pier
Lighthouse. Although a bit tricky to find at first, once you find Tiscornia
Park, you’ll want to keep coming back. From M63 north, turn left
on Momany Drive, the first street after crossing the St. Joseph River.
Turn Left on Upton and follow this to Marina Drive. You will pass the
marina and the St. Joseph River Yacht Club. Then turn right on Ridgeway.
The Park is at 80 Ridgeway St.

No alcohol, Park open from 6 am - 10pm.
