Reading Together: The community that reads together grows together. (cont.)By Miriam DowneyJoan comments
that many high school classes have this book on their reading lists
for their literature and civics classes, so there will
be many high school aged participants this year. She says, “When
Tim O'Brien visits Kalamazoo on March 21, h Copies of The Things They Carried are now available at all Kalamazoo Public Library branches, the Portage Public Library and all the other county libraries as well as all the community bookstores. Community events will begin on February 14 and run through March 21, 2006, culminating with a visit to Kalamazoo on March 21 by author Tim O'Brien. All discussions, films, and events are free and open to the public. Book clubs, church groups, school classrooms, university classes, and other groups will be reading the book and then coming together for the community-wide events. Those of us who lived through the Viet Nam War, through World War II, the Gulf War and now the War in Iraq know that the scars of war last far longer than the war itself. Reading Together this year will explore the hurts of war and its aftermath. So, read this wonderful book, discuss it with your spouse, your teenager, your relatives, your book club. Then join the larger community. The community that reads together grows together. |
