Coldwater: A nod to the past with a focus on the future

(cont.)

On the other side of the business district from the Tibbits is the Wing House Museum, the home ofWing House the Branch County Historical Society. The house is a step back to the Victorian Era because the house was owned by the same family for over 100 years and left to the community with all its possessions intact. Each room has been preserved with family antiques and memorabilia. Over 80 percent of the museum’s artifacts are unique to the house.
One of the most delightful characteristics of the house is its accessibility. No room is “off limits” to visitors. The curator and a dedicated group of volunteers keep the house and its furnishings available for guests and delight in telling visitors stories about each item in the house. A working 1893 Regina Music Box sits in the living room with a stock of huge metal disks filled with songs of the era and can be played upon request. Children will be very interested in the toys, clothes, and furniture that the Wing children used over the years.
Often used for luncheons, wedding rehearsal dinners, and parties, the Wing House Museum is a unique reminder of life in a long ago era. The neighborhood around the Wing House Museum includes homes built in the 1800s in Italian Villa, Greek Revival and Queen Anne styles as well as Dutch Revival, Colonial Revival and Federal Style. Many of the homes are open for house tours during the holidays. The Tourism Bureau has walking and driving maps available.

There is so much to do in the community of Coldwater; a family can easily spend a day or a mini-vacation weekend here. The Little River Railroad, which operates two historic steam locomotives, runs between Coldwater and Quincy and is operational from June through October and in December. The Capri Drive-in Theater is open for first run movies in the summer. The Quincy One-Room School at the Branch County Fairgrounds is a living museum, open to the public and school children. Excellent restaurants and shops abound including Sauk Trail Trading Post, which celebrates the Native American heritage of the area, and the Los Tequilas restaurant housed in a granary building built circa 1890.

Come and be surprised by Coldwater, one of the most delightful communities in Southwest Michigan.
